7 Creative ways to use your Year at a Glance

by Nicola Knobel 10 Jan 2020 0 Comments

Hi! Nicola here from My Inner Creative, and this is always a tricky topic to cover, because the information online can be SO overwhelming!

Traditionally your year at a glance should be used as a "future log". However, in our pre printed planners, the space can sometimes be a little cramped for all the things we might want to add in.

Now if you do not have your own Future Log or haven't yet made one in your planner you can download one here.

What is a future log?

According to the Bullet Journal website this is what a future log means to the creator
"It keeps all of your future events in one place. Anything that occurs in future months such as birthdays, holidays, trips, meetings, and more would go in the Future Log. It’s a simple and easy place to flip to when you need to check when a specific event is happening. The Future Log is located at the front of your Bullet Journal."
So how is this different from the year at a glance? They year at a glance is a part of your planner that lists all the upcoming events throughout the year, and much like the future log, the year at a glance helps your see a high level view of what your year might look like!
Traditionally people use this for planning out future events, holidays, birthdays and the likes, but sometimes you might feel as though you do not have enough space

What can I use my year at a glance for?

There are a ton of things you could use it for, but in summary, you should be using it for major events, however.... here are some alternative ideas for you to try!

  1. A Step tracker, use the date to track the steps you have taken
  2. A "Year in pixels" - I am sure you have seen a year in pixels spread, where people color code moods, feelings etc, you could easily use this as your year spread and after a year, you'd see some trends
  3. A word a day that describes the type of day you had
  4. Gratitude for each day, a line or word
  5. If you are religious it could a scripture a day
  6. You could use it as a health tracker, tracking health and fitness goals
  7. Cute things your children say or even fun things they have done (If you have kids!) or if you want to save compliments, that would work too!

Using your year at a glance for project planning

Sometimes you might be using your planner solely for work or project management, you can easily use this space to map out your projects and milestones for projects throughout the year! Use some thin washi tape to combine dates and show the length of projects over months or weeks.

Now this doesn't mean that its a fool proof project management tool, absolutely not, and you might have seen our previous post on the A&O blog about project management which covers off 6 amazing ways to use your planner for project management.

As always thanks for spending some time here and we look forward to seeing you again
