How To Use A Dream Log
Hey guys, Masha here from Masha Plans.
Today we are talking about one more fun thing you can add to your Bullet Journal - a dream log!
It can also be a great excuse to use any other planners or notebooks you might have laying around the house - by turning them into a dream journal.
Not too convinced? Let me walk you through dream journaling and all the cool and impressive perks you can get out of it.
WHY DREAM LOGGING
Why would you want to do a dream log, to begin with? Well, it can actually serve so many purposes.
We are all aware that during sleep, our logic gets turned off and sheer creativity flows away. You might be getting some breathtaking ideas in your sleep!
But it all will be useless if you don’t remember them, and chances are if you don’t write it right away after waking up - you’ll forget about it within an hour.
Logging your dreams can help you develop and improve your creativity.
Another thing your brain does when you sleep: it tries to solve the problems you have in real life.
Unlike in your waking stage though, in your dreams, there is no constant self-talk and ideas distracting you from seeing the right thing to do.
So actually you come up with some creative solutions to your real-life problems while you’re sleeping, and to remember them you definitely can use a dream log.
As we already established, your dreams often reflect your real life. So, sometimes your dreams can actually show you your true worries and feelings about things.
In waking time, we are burdened with other people’s opinions and all the consequences and generally all the things happening with a speed of life. That leads to us often not being able to see what our true feelings are.
But if you have a log of your dreams and spend some time thinking about it, you’ll find clues in it. Your brain will always find a way to reflect your real feelings during the dream stage.
You can also use your dream log to determine your real-life stressors that way. Once you know these are the things that cause you to feel stressed and anxious, it’s easier to start working on eliminating them and changing your life for the better.
Basically what I’m saying here is - our brains are very smart and complicated machines and dreams are the way the brain can communicate with you and help you discover more about yourself.
All this knowledge is there, all you really need is to listen to yourself. Log your dreams and then just spend some time reading through and analyzing what they might mean in alignment with your life.
HOW TO LOG DREAMS
I hope I managed to explain to you how important dreams can be and how useful it is to log your dreams.
If so, let’s now talk about little things you can do to make sure you keep up with your dream logging.
- Log your dreams every day
To develop a habit you need to do something regularly, so be sure you log your dreams every day. You never know what night will be the big a-ha moment, so why not log them all.
Moreover, it’s pretty interesting to later reread your dreams and see how they actually reflected the situations you were in your waking life.
- Keep your dream journaling supplies next to your bed
Believe me, if it’s not the first thing you do when you wake up - the day will take over and you’ll never do it. Plus the longer you wait the less you remember about your dream.
So be sure you have your dream logging supplies easily accessible so you can start writing as soon as you’re awake and while the dream is still vivid in your memory.
- Set enough time each morning
We all have our obligations and usually, mornings are such a rush time. If you want to log your dreams be sure to wake up early enough so you can have time to log whatever adventures you had that night.
- Record all the details
You never know what things can be important, so when you’re logging the dream - just be sure to write everything as detailed as you remember.
Later when you reread it and analyze you’ll be able to figure out which details were clues and which ones were just a creative embellishment.
- Include afterthoughts
Just logging your dreams can be useful, but you’ll get much more if you spend a few minutes analyzing your dreams.
Think about how it made you feel, why, how does that relate to your real life.
Ask yourself more questions like that to find what exactly your brain is trying to tell you. Sometimes it might be your true feelings that keep you behind, or it might be just that it was something you have been thinking about before sleep.
For me, this is always the most interesting and important part, because once I start doing that I really end up discovering some pretty hidden feelings I had no idea I had!
