GOUACHE ARTWORK IN THE BLACKOUT SKETCHBOOK

by Guest Blogger 08 Apr 2020 0 Comments

Hello, my Lovelies! Thank you so much for visiting. I hope you are keeping safe.

This is Payal Sinha, the artist behind @thesimplyaesthetic back with another fun project for you to try out. Things have been so crazy all around the world lately and I thought that this artwork would be a dose of positivity and a gateway to forgetting our troubles for a while.

Before we move on, I just wanted to give you a quick idea about the medium Gouache.

What is Gouache?

For those of you who are not familiar with this medium, Gouache is an opaque medium that is water-soluble. This basically means that it uses the same pigments and gum arabic binder as a watercolour but has white been added to it so that it loses the translucency of watercolour. As a result, it dries to a flat, matt colour makes it ideal for Commercial Art, Illustration and posters. White Gouache is also often used to add intense highlights to watercolour paintings.

Please don’t worry if you don’t have a Gouache at home. You can use your normal watercolour paints directly from the tube without diluting them with water and adding a bit of white or even some poster colours.

I am going to take you to step by step through the entire process of the artwork I did and I would love to see you recreate them. So, without wasting much time, Let's get started.

MATERIALS YOU’LL NEED

STEP 1: ROUGHLY SKETCHING OUR SUBJECT

Since I have picked the subject to be a FLOWER VASE (since its almost springtime). I am first going to create a basic sketch of the vase and the flower arrangement. Don’t worry, IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE PERFECT! Just roughly create a sketch so you have an idea about the composition. I wanted my vase to be unsymmetrical to give it a very free hand look, it’s completely your choice.

STEP 2: PAINTING OUR SUBJECT

Here comes the fun part. Playing around with the paints and painting our subject. There are no particular rules on how you can paint them. Just follow what you heart tells you.

There is just one thing we need to keep in mind when we pick our colour palette is the opacity. Since we are working on  a black surface we will be adding more white to our colours so that they stand out on a dark surface.

STEP 3: JAZZING UP THE SUBJECT

I personally love adding hints of gold in my artworks because I find it really pleasing to my eyes. You can use metallic watercolours or inks to jazz up your artwork by adding a few leaves in gold and making a few random circles of different size on the vase.

ADMIRE YOUR CREATION!

I hope you enjoyed this process and I cannot wait to see your recreations. If you have any questions you can always reach me out at the Instagram @thesimplyaesthetic.

Until next time lovely people, take care and keep feeding your soul with creativity!
